As a third and final time mum, I wanted to splash out on my last pushchair and car seat for my little one. I had had a Graco travel system with my first, it was fabulous, couldn’t fault it till a wheel dropped off but by then I had had my monies worth, and bought a Maclaren Techno. What a buggy!!! Fantastic, no gripes with it. Compact and easy to push.
With second baby, I had Baby Bruin from Babies R US, useless waste of time that was, I changed it again for a newer version of the same pushchair, again a waste of time, wheels knocked together and it used to stray all over the place, so I bought a Mamas and Papas second hand travel system, it was ok although very bulky. Then the wheel fell off and I couldn’t get a replacement as it was too old, (well actually, only a year or so old, but hey ho) customer services did try to find a spare wheel for me, when I got it, it didn’t fit the pushchair and I got fed up with shelling out for postage sending the wheels back. Finally I went back to my old Maclaren buggy for my first one, as I no longer needed to travel system. Still had plenty of life in it still easy to push 5 years on. Excellent
So when I cam to having my last baby I thought I shall go fro a Maclaren travel system, that’s what I want. But when I went to buy it a si didn’t know what I was having I found the colours very limited and to be frank boring. I like bright colours for babies, oranges and greens, so I didn’t rush out and buy it straight away waiting in hope for a new colour nearer to when my baby was due. Unfortunately for me, I made a detour and popped into Mamas and Papas store in Solihull with my mother in law. We were both taken in with great sales techniques, and choice of fabrics available for the Lunar pushchair and being able to choose from a range of great coloured and patterned fabrics I promptly ordered the travel system.
When it arrived I rushed to open it and put together, I was so disappointed that the car seat I had ordered wasn’t plain, and it had a totally different pattern on it to the one I had bought for the main pushchair. Considering every thing matches at Mamas and Papas I was very surprised that this wasn’t a consideration when selling a travel system. I ploughed on never the less.
After an hour and a half and two calls to Mamas and Papas, I was pulling my hair out. They had enclosed the wrong clips for the car seat, so they didn’t fit the pram, back to Mamas and Papas and an exchange. Not happy!
The new clips went on easily but when it came to taking them off I just couldn’t remove them. I was still pregnant at that point and due a Caesarean section there was no way I was going to be able to pull them off the chair when I have the baby. Even customer services admitted they could be tight.
Out one night with family, a week after having the baby, I put the baby bag across the back of the handles where every other baby bag I have had in the past went and where 99.9% of other mothers put the bag! The pushchair tipped forward, it had the baby in the car seat attached to the pram and the weight of the bag, which I might add was no heavier than normal and no stuffed to gunnels, and thank god my husband saw it going and managed to grab it before it tipped over fully.
By this time I had had enough, I went back to Mamas and Papas and told them what had happened.
I was told there and then, but I wasn’t told this when I bought it, that they advise all their customers to put the bags in the basket underneath. I burst out laughing and stated as a third time mother, ‘I had never heard such rubbish, and how the heck was I supposed to get the bag out from under the pushchair when having had such a major operation?’
Surely a pushchair is designed to take the weight of a bag across the handles?
Any way regarding the tipping of the pushchair according to the sales man, all the Mamas and Papas pushchairs are tried and spun round at very fast rates with a brick secured into the centre of the pram, it was impossible that what I was saying had happened!!
My baby isn’t brick shaped, and wriggles and moves, how can a brick be a good test of a pushchair, has no one at Mamas and Papas tried the chair with a baby in it and a bag across the handles.
Not happy at this point I wanted my money back, I was told that they would give me the money back for the pushchair at the discretion of the manager but not for the car seat as there wasn’t anything wrong with it. So I was left with £130 of car seat that was useless as a travel system, unless I bought another Mamas and Papas pushchair for it to fit on.
I was raging by this point but what could I do, so I tested all the pushchairs that would take the car seat to see if they would tip, out of all of them with a bag across the handles only the URBO was difficult to push down on…guess what if I wanted it, I had to pay another £160 plus the cost of the previous returned pushchair £160 for the chair and the cosy toes. I really wouldn’t have been spending that kind of money if they had taken the car seat back.
I like the look of the new pushchair, the URBO, but it so impractical. Do real mums try them out before they are sold on the shop floor?
I have had this pushchair now just 5 month’s, I can’t wait to chuck it out.
The hood to the car seat doesn’t stay up, never has done properly, I spent ages trying to get the little metal clips back it the slider which even the shop assistant couldn’t do.
I have two plastic clips floating about my car, easily lost, to take the car seat as the main body of the pushchair has to be removed first, this floats around the car and the dining room waiting to be used on walks.
It’s annoying why they couldn’t design it to take the car seat on top? I will never know.
In fact, I was sold a car seat and a pushchair not a travel system which I originally wanted.
I am so angry at being conned; I wanted a travel system and got nothing but stress and headaches. I wrote to customer services, they couldn’t give a damn! They don’t care, they have my money.
I would love to try these pushchairs and prams out for Mamas and Papas and save hundreds of precious wasted hours for all the hard working mums, mums who have saved hard to buy decent items and expect a level of service from such a reputable company.
All I can say is beware, buy at your peril, and don’t be taken in the sales person with the friendly grin.
They only want to see how good your money looks within their tin!!.
I can’t believe ‘as a third time mother’ you had never heard you can’t put shopping over the handles! I knew this way before I had a baby. It’s stated in so many product guides and also by friends/family who have done it and had their pushchair tipped. I know you had a caesarean, but was just carrying the bag not an option? I don’t think you can blame mamas and papas for that. It simply must have been a heavy bag, it’s impossible for it to happen without sufficient weight pulling at it.
I have never hung anything from my pushchair except my sons toys. I have a mamas and papas rubix, and there are no faults at all. Having bought a mamas and papas pushchair, I fail to see how you could have bought the urbo not knowing already that the car seat only goes on the chassis if the other seat is removed.
